Current Event #17~Fiji Cyclone

Macey Deering 1/13/20 Group: A As of January 13, 2020, Fiji is bracing for a “tropical cyclone” that could impact the cruise very strongly if they didn’t cancel it. Heavy rains are expected to develop on Wednesday and could last until Sunday. “Mamanuca and Yasawa island” will be affected by extremely high winds and rough seas. The “Reef Endeavor” was going to set sail on January 14th for a four-night cruise but was postponed until January 18th. This is the second tropical cyclone to pass-through Fiji this year after Tropical Cyclone Sarai passed 2 weeks ago. It was a category 2 and damaged a number of farms and caused over 2,000 people to take shelter in evacuation shelters around the country. Some cruises have already been affected by this storm and more to come.  I think that this matter is very dangerous and could hurt so many lives if people don’t postpone their cruises. It may not be fair that you have to wait because of a bad storm but also you want to be safe and

Current Event #18~ Emmaleigh Barringer

Macey Deering 1/24/20 Group: A In October 2016, Benjamin Taylor (33) allegedly raped and killed 10-month old Emmaleigh Barringer. One night in October, Taylor was watching over Emmaleigh while the mom was at work. When she got home, she could tell something was wrong because the baby wasn’t anywhere to be seen. She found the 10-month old laying on their basement floor covered in blood and unresponsive, she took the baby upstairs and called 911. Later in the month, while being at court, Taylor changed his story multiple times before telling the investigators that he took the baby to the basement and “blacked out.”  The police said that Taylor was listening to music and watching pornography around the time that he raped Emmaleigh. The little girl was put into the hospital and two long days later, she passed away from very severe head injuries and trauma.  I think that this matter is very depressing and should be taken very seriously. Some people may think that life in

Current Event #16~E. Coli Outbreak

Macey Deering 12/11 Group: A Many people in the U.S love salad whether it’s Chopped, Tossed, Ceaser, Sunflower Crisp, Chicken, or even Cobb. In this case, we’re dealing with the Sunflower Crisp, and what went wrong during the weeks of November 5-November 15, 2019. In Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota, people bought the lettuce package and after eating it, they developed signs of E. Coli and Kidney failure. The food inspectors are still trying to figure out which ingredient is causing the contamination. They have a hypothesis that it might be romaine lettuce from the Salinas growing region but they are still going to test all ingredients. “The produce becomes tainted after coming into contact runoff contaminated with animal feces.” Even if you do prewash your food multiple times, it can still carry bacteria and other harmful things. Salinas Valley grows 60% of the nation’s lettuce and the CDC is telling people to ignore and not eat it until further notice.  I th

Current Event #15~ Deadly Storm In The U.S

Macey Deering Group: A 12/1/19 On Tuesday, November 26, 2019, and Wednesday, November 27, 2019, a very deadly storm took its path throughout the U.S. There was lots of snow, rain, and very strong winds, and a lot of calls for trees down in the road, powerlines down, and structures that were damaged. Forecasters said that a new storm is going to bring in several feet of mountain snow and gusty winds this weekend. Many major highways have just been reopened in Wyoming and Colorado due to a day of snowing and high winds, which caused the roads to be clogged with snowdrifts. Almost the entire length of the 2 Wyoming interstates was closed on Saturday. In Missouri, 3 people died when their car was swept off flooding roads in Bollinger County. On that same Saturday but a different incident, a 48-year-old Louisiana man died. On Thursday, many people were traveling for Thanksgiving to see family members or even friends and some of the trips were delayed or even took much lon

Current Event #14~Nokomis Death

Macey Deering 11/22/19 Group: A       On Wednesday, November 20, 2019, a teen was reported missing at a national park in Utah. Savannah McTague was a 19-year-old woman who graduated at Nokomis High School in 2017 as a junior. She was a Zion national park concessions employee, who was hiking the trail on Wednesday. When she never returned to her destination, people reported her missing. Early Thursday morning, her body was found by a search and rescue team after many long hours of people searching for her. Police officials say that her body was and still is being examined, but they say she was killed after she “fell to her death.” Utah authorities are still investigating her body and we will be kept updated.        I feel very sad for the family and friends of Savannah because she was so young and beautiful and didn’t get to have a very long life. I think that this subject might be very hard for some people because they were so close to Savannah and probably loved her ver

Current Event #13~ Portland Manslaughter

Macey Deering 11/21/19 Group: A Only July 21, 2019, Kenneth Morang clocked out of work 30 minutes early because he had just got done a 16-hour shift at the county jail. Kenneth Morang was 62 years old and was accused of manslaughter for his actions that took place in Gorham, Maine. He was a corrections officer at the Cumberland County Jail. He was on his way home in his pickup truck on Route 21, when he rear-ended a vehicle and pushed it into oncoming traffic. The passenger in the vehicle, Raelynn Bell 9, was injured and rushed to the hospital. She died 3 days later on July 24, 2019. Morang was later indicted by a Cumberland County Grand Jury but a York County District Attorney Office will be on the case only because Morang was a Cumberland County employee.  I think that this case was handled very well because even though it might have been an accident, he still got pressed with the right charges. I also think that he might have been a little tired because he just g

Current Event #12~ Lake Pollution

Macey Deering 11/21/19 Group: A When reading VTDigger, they reported that a water panel has released recommendations for reducing phosphorus pollution in Lake Champlain. This is because  Canada is “ranging from switching crops to setting up a phosphorus import-export budget.” This report is out for comment until December 14th, 2019 and is a part of the Broader Lake Pollution Study. The International Joint Commission aids the U.S and Canada to resolve water boundary issues. The IJC will be holding a 2-hour meeting to see what should be done about this issue. Missisquoi Bay, which is the tip of Lake Champlain has some of the highest phosphorus levels in the whole 490 sq. mile lake. “Excess phosphorus can lead to toxic cyanobacteria blooms , which have been a significant issue in this part of the lake since the ’90s.” Cyanobacteria blooms can take away the oxygens and nutrients that other organisms need to survive. I think that this issue needs to be resolved very s
